Is a merchant required by law to give me cash for a gift certificate?
I someone gives me a gift certificate and I don't want it, or I'd just rather have the cash, is the merchant required to buy the gift certificate back?

they are only obligated to honor it for purchases. Otherwise there could be too much fraud. Cards purchased with stolen credit cards and turned in for cash back, as an example.
