What is the right amount of money for a decent gift card?

I usually make holiday gift baskets for teachers. I fill them with hand lotions, candles, cookies, candies, starbucks card etc.

This year, I had absolutely no time to shop ahead of time. I am planning to give a gift card and homemade cookies for everyone on my list.

How much money do you add in your gift cards if you had about 15 school staff on your list including teachers, helpers and specialists who are all actively involved with your kid.

  1. I won’t even ask who is paying for this, because it’s irrelevant.

To get your amount, just think of all the things you put in each basket last year and total it up. There’s your gift card.

  2. I would put at least three dollars on them but not higher than ten dollars.

  3. It depends on your budget and relationship with everyone.
Fifteen is a lot of people so even $10 each will add up. I would imagine $10-$20 would be fair.
A $10 Starbucks or Target card would still be appreciated even in its small amount. Some teachers are using they’re own money to pay for school supplies or treasure boxes so Staples or Dollar Tree cards would be fine.

I try to limit all gifts, including birthdays to around $10 only because it can add up and you hardly know some of these people.

Keep a look out for deals through out the year. Wal-Mart has three flavored popcorn in Holiday tins for $5 each. I’m giving them to all the teachers, bus driver, dance teacher etc. A tin of popcorn is not something I would purchase just for my self plus it’s a great gift for movie nights during the school holiday.

For the end of the year gift, I’m giving everyone a Scene It DVD game. It regularly goes for $30 and I found them for under $8. What a deal! I understand that Five Below are now selling the Scene It games.

  4. I’d say $3.00 $5.00, but that depends on your financial situation, as well.

    ps: I prefer Timmy’s Coffee….., not SB….LOL

  5. I think the cookies are enough. That is a lot of money to spend on all the teachers. They should not expect big gifts and probably don’t.

  6. Normally you can put any where from 10 to 20 dollars or if you want to you could of course give more but considering the number of people you have to give gifts to, in my opinion is a good average.

  7. $5 is more than enough for at least one good frap (or a few reg coffees). But this doesnt have to go to everyone. The cookies are more than enough for the helpers. Save the GC for the main teacher and specialist.

  8. $20 dollars sounds right, but cookies are plenty to give for Christmas!
Personally, I would love to get homemade cookies alone, (or even decorated Christmas cookies from Walmart) instead of cash! Yum! Just put them on a pretty plastic plate, cover with saran wrap and stick a bow on top along with a very nice Christmas card (signed Gratefully yours…XXXX and XXXX).

If not cookies, cash inside a pretty envelope is better because you are not telling them where to shop with cash. Gift cards used always go over the amount or are underused wth cash left on the card.

  9. $10 per gift card is decent.
